A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Assam on Sunday at 4:41 PM, sending strong tremors across several parts of the state. According to initial reports, the epicentre was located 16 km from Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district.
Residents in Sonitpur, Tezpur, and nearby areas reported sudden jolts that lasted for several seconds, forcing many to rush outdoors. The quake was felt in parts of neighbouring states as well.
As of now, there are no immediate reports of major damage or casualties, but authorities have begun monitoring the situation closely. Disaster response teams are on alert in case of aftershocks or structural damage.
Earthquakes are not uncommon in the Northeast seismic zone, which is categorized as one of India’s most earthquake-prone regions.
