Guwahati, Dec 6 : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed on Wednesday significant progress in law and order and the crime situation in Assam over the last year.
During the press conference, Sarma stated, based on NCRB data, that Assam is receiving positive national attention for its significant improvement in law-and-order maintenance and the crime situation in a relatively short time.
Crimes against women in 2022 were 14,148, indicating a significant improvement compared to the 29,046 crimes reported in 2021, a reduction of more than half (51%), he said.
Similarly, crimes against children in 2022 were reported as 4,084, reflecting a significant reduction compared to the 5,282 crimes reported in 2021, a decrease of 23%, he added.
The crime rate in Assam has notably decreased in 2022, with a 48% reduction in total crimes, a 47% decrease in violent crimes, and a 40% drop in kidnapping and abduction cases. The recovery rate of stolen property increased significantly from 24.8% in 2021 to 54.8% in 2022, marking an impressive improvement. Human trafficking cases decreased by one-third (31%), and murder cases saw a 10% reduction, he said.
Economic offences reported in 2022 decreased by more than half (53%), reflecting positive trends.
There’s a notable increase in actions against corruption, with cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act and related IPC sections rising from 16 in 2021 to 57 in 2022. The conviction rate for IPC crimes also witnessed a significant increase from 6.13% in 2021 to 13.56% in 2022, currently standing at 15.80% and continuously improving, he added.
This mission for improving the image of Assam will continue, he remarked.
