AP Government permits 10% EWS reservation in education and jobs

The eligibility to receive EWS has been increased from ₹5 lakh per annum to ₹8 lakh per annum by the government of Andhra Pradesh.

Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government in Andhra Pradesh has announced its decision to implement 10 percent reservations in jobs and education for Economically Backward Classes (EBC).

According to a Government Order (GO) issued on Wednesday night, Chief Secretary to AP Government,  Dr. Adityanath Das has listed operational guidelines to implement 10 percent EWS reservations for initial appointments in the posts and services provided by the state government.

Das stated that the people who were not covered in reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) categories as well as the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes and whose gross family income was less than ₹8 lakh shall receive the benefit of EWS reservation.

He continued, “The income shall also include income from all sources i.e. salary, agriculture, business, profession, etc. for the financial year prior to the year of application.”

Moreover, Das said the term “family” regarding this purpose will be inclusive of people that seek the benefit of reservation, their parents and siblings not above the age of 18 years as well as their spouses and children below 18 years of age.

The reservation will benefit Kapu, Kamma, Reddy, Vaishya, and other non-Brahmin communities. Out of the 10 percent reservation for the EWS category, one-third will be reserved for women.

The Union Government of India had introduced the quota through the Constitution (One Hundred third, 103rd CAA) Bill, 2019 in the recruitment of government jobs.
