In the wake of the tragic crash involving Air India Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, Tata Group Chairperson N Chandrasekaran has issued an official statement expressing deep sorrow and extending condolences to those affected.
“With profound sorrow, I confirm that Air India Flight 171… was involved in a tragic accident today,” said Chandrasekaran. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event.”

He emphasized that the immediate priority is supporting victims and their families. Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has activated an emergency centre and set up dedicated support teams to assist those impacted. The airline is also coordinating with emergency response teams on site.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the flight had 242 people on board, including two pilots and 10 cabin crew members. The aircraft was under the command of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a Line Training Captain with 8,200 hours of flying experience. The First Officer, Clive Kundar, had 1,100 hours of flying experience.
