Ahead of approaching assembly elections in five states and then the Lok Sabha elections next year, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed the ‘Newton’ Actor Rajkummar Rao as the National Icon to motivate voters to participate in the polling process. The formal announcement and ceremony held on Thursday (October 26), where Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar formally appointed him as the National Icon of ECI.

Taking to social media platform X, ECI’s handle for Voter Awareness made a post: “Actor @RajkummarRao appointed as National Icon of #ECI From On-Screen Elections in ‘Newton’ to Off-Screen Voter Awareness Hero, it is “ Lights, Camera, Vote !” for #RajkummarRao Rao all the way. #ECI #RajkummarRao #NationalIcon”

The Spokesperson of ECI also made a post on X and wrote: “Actor @RajkummarRao steps into the limelight again – this time as ECI’s National Icon. In image: MOU with Election Commission to promote voter education and turnout, signed today in New Delhi.”

The actor is known for his outstanding roles in different movies. He played the role of an honest and determined government clerk in the 2017 film ‘Newton’ to conduct a free-and-fair election in the Naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh for which he was applauded for his brilliant performance.

The assembly elections in five states are scheduled to be held between November 7 to November 30 followed by the counting and result declaration on December 3, 2023.
