A man has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi district for allegedly assaulting his minor granddaughter, police said.

According to Kotwali police station in-charge Sachchidanand Pandey, the incident took place in the early hours of March 17. The child’s mother was not at home at the time, while other family members were downstairs. At around 5 a.m., the family heard the girl screaming and rushed to the upper floor, where they allegedly found the accused in the act.

The child was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. In the meantime, the accused fled from the house.

Police said that after the girl’s condition stabilised, her father lodged a written complaint against his own father late on Thursday night.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under Section 65(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with rape of a girl below 12 years of age, along with relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The accused was later arrested from a relative’s house following a tip-off, Pandey said, adding that further investigation is underway.
