In the early hours of Tuesday, August 20, two earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.9 and 4.8 struck Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir. The tremors were felt by residents who quickly took to social media to confirm the event and share videos of swaying ceiling fans and other effects.
As per National Centre for Seismology, the epicentre of the quake that hit Kashmir at 6: 45 am, was in northern Baramulla district. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported so far.
“EQ of M: 4.9, On: 20/08/2024 06:45:57 IST, Lat: 34.17 N, Long: 74.16 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir,” said the NCS, in a post on X.
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority, most areas of the Kashmir Valley, as well as Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar in the Jammu region, are classified under Seismic Zone V, which is a very high damage risk zone.
Reports indicate that a man in Baramulla, north Kashmir, sustained injuries after jumping from a building to escape the earthquake.
