Overnight heavy rains in the city of Mumbai have killed 15 people till now following house collapses in the city’s Vikhroli and Chembur areas. The death toll is expected to rise as more people are still feared to be trapped inside. The National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) has reached the areas and a rescue mission is currently underway.

The incessant rains have also led to widespread waterlogging and suspension of local trains on Central and Western Railways.

According to BMC, three people died in Mumbai’s Vikhroli after a ground plus one residential structure collapsed in the face of heavy rains. 5-6 more people may be trapped in the Vikhroli area, news agency NI reported quoting an NDRF official.

Meanwhile, a wall collapse in Chembur’s Bharat Nagar has led to the recovery of 12 bodies as yet, ANI reported.

“No local train services are running in both UP and DN direction till further notice due to waterlogging at multiple locations,” DRM WR tweeted at 5:19 AM. Meanwhile, the CR has said that the suburban trains are operational beyond Thane on the mainline and Vashi and Panvel on Harbour Line. The CR reported heavy rains and waterlogging at Dadar, Parel, Sion and Kurla.

Between 8 pm on Saturday and 2 am on Sunday, Mumbai city recorded 156.94 mm of rain. The city’s eastern and western suburbs faced 143.14 mmm and 125.37 mm rain respectively in the same time period.
