
A 13 member committed has been set up by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department to study the new National Education Policy (NEP) and advise the state government on various reforms including two-language policy.
The panel will “advise the Government of Tamil Nadu on the policy response on all thrust areas of the National Education Policy 2020 subject to the state of Tamil Nadu continuing with its two-language policy,” said the government.
It will also assist the government on implementation of the latest policy in the short, medium, and long term based on the state’s resource availability.
The final report will probably be submitted after due consultation with all relevant stakeholders, within a period of one year from the date of its constitution. The government added that in view of the coronavirus pandemic, if necessary, the committee can conduct its meetings virtually.
The National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the central government on July 29. The NEP 2020 which replaces the National Policy on Education of 1986 has brought in major changes in higher education including a target of 50 per cent Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2035 and provision for multiple entries and exits.
