In honour of the 10-year anniversary of the Mijwan Welfare Society’s efforts to empower the community of women artisans, Manish Malhotra created a special couture line that was influenced by the exquisite art of Chikankari. Deepika Padukone and her husband Ranveer Singh were the royal showstoppers at the Mumbai-based event.

The Mijwan Welfare Society, which combines education and employment, has the dual goals of revitalising the traditional art of Chikan embroidery and empowering local women. Every Mijwan collection is built on the foundation of the Chikankari craft.

Manish Malhotra’s label once again paid homage to the art of Chikankari. Chikan is a delicate and well-done hand embroidery on a range of textile fabrics like muslin, silk, chiffon, organza, net, etc. Chikankari is the process of creating a chikan work. On light muslin and cotton clothing in cool, pastel tones, white thread is embroidered. Today, however, coloured and silk threads are also used to match current fashion trends.
The celebration of 10 years of Mijwan was a beautiful event that revived the vintage appeal by presenting the delicate Chikankari work, keeping it modern and glitzy. Chikan embroidery complements both a Western silhouette and a lehenga, thus this event appeals to the tastes of modern fashion enthusiasts everywhere. The series has exquisitely detailed flower Chikankari designs that add individual details. Even the Menswear collection emphasises the delicate Chikankari craft, showcasing an intriguing combination of urban and heritage.
