What is the SALICYLIC ACID?
Salicylic acid is made from willow bark and is one of a group of substances known as salicylates. Although its structure is a little convoluted, it is quite important when it comes to skin-care products. Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are the two kinds of acids you’ll encounter most frequently. Salicylic acid belongs to the BHA class. Salicylic acid is also more oil-soluble than BHAs, which allows it to infiltrate the skin’s pores because both alpha and beta hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin. Ingredients that are oil-soluble can penetrate the skin at a deeper level than those that are water-soluble because they can more easily pass through the lipid layers between the skin cells.
What benefits does it offer to your skin?
Blackheads and whiteheads caused by mild acne respond well to salicylic acid, which can also help stop further breakouts. Blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples (pustules) are common when your hair follicles (pores) become clogged with dead skin cells and oil. Salicylic acid penetrates your skin and works to dissolve the dead skin cells obstructing your pores. You may need to use it for a number of weeks before you notice its full effects, but if you haven’t noticed any improvement after 6 weeks, consult your dermatologist.
Side Effects
Especially at the beginning of therapy, skin reactions like peeling, burning, dryness, and reddish skin are possible. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist right once. Although a severe adverse reaction to this medication is extremely unlikely, if you experience any symptoms, such as rash, itching or swelling, severe dizziness, or problem in breathing, you should get medical attention right once.
