Traders across multiple brokerage platforms faced order placement issues on Monday, March 9, after a temporary connectivity problem impacted order routing to the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE).

Several brokers, including Upstox, alerted users through in-app notifications that some NSE orders were being rejected due to an exchange connectivity issue affecting brokers broadly.

Broker alerts confirm exchange connectivity problem

A notification sent to users stated that some NSE orders were getting rejected because of a connectivity issue at the exchange level. Brokers indicated that the issue was not specific to their platforms and that they would notify users once normal connectivity is restored.

Such alerts typically occur when broker systems are unable to consistently communicate with exchange servers, leading to failed order placements, modifications, or cancellations.

Orders may fail intermittently during the disruption

The issue appears to be intermittent rather than a full exchange outage. This means trading itself continues normally, but some orders may fail to reach the exchange or get rejected during processing.

In such cases, traders may experience:

Orders getting rejected by the exchange
Delay in order confirmation
Difficulty modifying or cancelling orders temporarily

Most of these problems usually resolve once connectivity stabilizes between broker infrastructure and the exchange network.

High market volatility may be contributing

Connectivity disruptions sometimes occur during high-volume trading sessions, when sudden spikes in market activity put pressure on exchange and broker infrastructure.

Monday’s session has seen heightened volatility across commodities and equities, driven by global geopolitical tensions and sharp moves in crude oil prices. Such conditions can lead to a surge in trading volumes, increasing the likelihood of temporary order routing issues.

No official trading halt announced

As of now, there has been no official circular from NSE indicating a trading halt or system-wide shutdown. The issue appears to be limited to connectivity affecting certain orders rather than the functioning of the exchange itself.

Brokers have advised users to retry placing orders after some time while the connectivity issue is being resolved.
