Shares of Rain Industries Ltd. gained more than 3% in Wednesday’s session, trading at Rs 131.17 on the NSE, after its subsidiary Rain Carbon Canada Inc. announced a strategic partnership with Green Graphite Technologies Inc. (GGT) to develop sustainable graphite anode active materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The collaboration, backed by a Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (NGen) grant, aims to establish a circular supply chain for critical battery materials in Canada’s fast-expanding zero-emission vehicle market.

Details of the partnership

Under this initiative, Rain Carbon will contribute its proprietary LIONCOAT® technology for converting feedstock materials into advanced carbon precursors, while GGT will deploy its GraphPure™ and GraphRenew™ purification technologies. Production will take place across facilities in Hamilton, Kingston, Montreal, and Mississauga, with commercial-scale operations expected to begin by 2026.

Strategic goals and market potential

The partnership targets the creation of two new graphite product lines and the implementation of eco-efficient manufacturing processes designed to reduce waste and carbon footprint while improving production efficiency.

By 2030, the project is expected to:

  • Develop new intellectual property in battery materials
  • Enhance domestic production capabilities
  • Create employment in Canada’s battery supply chain

Canada’s zero-emission vehicle market is projected to grow from 480,000 units in 2024 to over 21 million units by 2040, underscoring the immense need for sustainably sourced graphite—a critical component for EV batteries.
