Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a major defence contract from the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, for the supply of K9 Vajra-T Artillery Platforms to the Indian Army. This order reaffirms L&T’s leadership in developing advanced defence systems under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.

The K9 Vajra-T is a 155 mm, 52-calibre tracked self-propelled artillery platform, co-developed by L&T and South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace. It is specifically adapted to meet the Indian Army’s operational requirements in diverse terrains, including deserts, plains, and high-altitude regions.

L&T had previously won the contract for the first batch of 100 K9 Vajra-T platforms in 2017 through a global competitive bidding process. These platforms were delivered ahead of schedule and have performed exceptionally well since induction. The second batch will also be manufactured at L&T’s state-of-the-art Armoured Systems Complex in Hazira, Gujarat, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.

Mr. Arun Ramchandani, Senior Vice President and Head of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, commented, “We are proud to contribute to the self-reliance of India’s defence forces with indigenous manufacturing. This contract highlights our commitment to building a strong, integrated industrial ecosystem that supports MSMEs and boosts India’s defence capabilities.”

Project Highlights:

  • Platform: K9 Vajra-T (based on South Korea’s K9 Thunder)
  • Capabilities: Designed for varied terrains; manufactured indigenously
  • Facility: Armoured Systems Complex, Hazira, Gujarat
  • Classification: Major project (valued between ₹5,000–10,000 crore)

This contract further cements L&T’s reputation as a leader in high-tech defence manufacturing while aligning with India’s vision of achieving self-sufficiency in defence production.
