Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) were trading higher on Thursday, September 25, after government sources confirmed to CNBC-TV18 that the Defence Ministry will formally sign a contract with HAL for 97 Tejas Mark-1A fighter jets worth ₹67,000 crore this afternoon.
The acquisition proposal was earlier approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security in August 2025, and today marks the signing of the commercial contract.
This will be the second major Tejas contract for HAL after the February 2021 agreement, when the Defence Ministry signed a ₹47,000 crore deal for 83 Tejas Mark-1A jets.
The order significantly boosts HAL’s order book and strengthens India’s indigenous defence manufacturing push under the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
