India is set to expand its defense exports with a $200 million missile deal with the Philippines, sources told Reuters. The expected agreement involves the Akash surface-to-air missile system, developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL).

Developed by India’s defense research body, the Akash missile system has gained international attention. As per a Reuters report, the Philippines has expressed interest and is expected to place an order in the upcoming fiscal year starting in April. With a range of up to 25 km, Akash was previously exported to Armenia in a $230-million deal, making the Philippine transaction potentially more substantial. While the specifics regarding the number of missiles and associated systems, including radars, remain undisclosed, this deal underscores India’s growing presence in the global defense market.

Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), the manufacturer of Akash missiles, has actively showcased its capabilities, notably participating in the Asian Defense and Security Exhibition in Manila last year. Although neither BDL nor India’s defense ministry has commented on the deal, Philippine defense spokesperson Arsenio Andolong confirmed that the country requires such military capabilities.

This deal emerges against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the South China Sea, where Manila faces frequent confrontations with Beijing over territorial disputes. Strengthening its defense infrastructure is a priority for the Philippines, as highlighted by its armed forces chief, General Romeo Brawner. He recently announced plans to procure more BrahMos missile systems and at least two submarines to modernize the country’s military arsenal.
