Shares of Ajanta Pharma Ltd. moved over 4% higher in early trade after the company announced a strategic in-licensing agreement with Biocon Ltd. for Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used to improve glycaemic control in adults with diabetes.
The positive market reaction reflects investor confidence in Ajanta Pharma’s ability to strengthen its branded generics portfolio and expand its presence across high-growth emerging markets. Under the agreement, Biocon will supply Semaglutide to Ajanta Pharma for exclusive marketing rights in 23 countries and semi-exclusive rights in three additional countries across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
Semaglutide is a well-established GLP-1 receptor agonist widely used in the management of type-2 diabetes. The product patent is set to expire in most of the targeted markets by March 2026, opening the door for branded generic launches. Ajanta Pharma expects to commercialize the product after receiving the necessary regulatory approvals, which are anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027.
This in-licensing arrangement aligns closely with Ajanta Pharma’s long-term strategy of identifying gaps in key therapeutic markets and launching differentiated products with strong brand potential. The company has been a pioneer among Indian pharmaceutical firms in building a robust branded generics business supported by its own field force across more than 30 countries in Africa, South-East Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
Over the years, Ajanta has steadily expanded its footprint in these regions by broadening its product portfolio, increasing its medical representative network, and establishing leadership positions across several therapeutic segments, including cardiology, anti-diabetic, ophthalmology, antibiotics, anti-malarials, pain management, gynaecology, paediatrics, and general health. Today, the company markets over 220 brands in emerging markets, many of which hold leadership positions in their respective therapeutic and sub-therapeutic categories.
With more than 2,000 medical representatives promoting its products on the ground, Ajanta Pharma has built strong brand recall and credibility within the international medical community. Its ability to secure timely regulatory approvals and scale new launches into sustainable brands has been a key competitive advantage.
