The Adani Group’s Australian coal unit, Bravus Mining and Resources, is facing accusations of racial discrimination filed by the Nagana Yarrbayn Wangan & Jagalingou Cultural Custodians with Australia’s Human Rights Commission. The allegations stem from incidents where Adani employees allegedly obstructed Aboriginal members from accessing cultural sites near the Carmichael coal mine to perform traditional rites.
Adrian Burragubba, the Senior Cultural Custodian, stated, “We have endured years of discrimination and vilification from Adani. Legal recourse is the only answer.” The group is demanding compensation, an apology, social media content removal, and anti-racism training for Adani’s staff.
Bravus has denied the allegations, claiming compliance with Australian laws and agreements with the majority Traditional Owner group. It stated that the mine has been operating responsibly under Indigenous Land Use Agreements for over two years. The Australian Human Rights Commission has yet to confirm receipt of the complaint.
