Budget 2023: Outlay for PM Awaas Yojana raised by 66% to over Rs 79,000 cr

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed on Wednesday that the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM Awaas Yojana/ PM Gramin Awas Yojna) budget has been increased by 66% to over Rs 79,000 crores. The outlay for the PM Awaas Yojana was expected to be boosted by approximately 48,000 crore. The budget for fiscal year 2022-23 was Rs 40,000 crore. The measure will assist the underprivileged and offer a boost to the government’s attempts to meet the aim of “housing for all” by 2024. Among other measures, Sitharaman pledged Rs 15,000 crore for Scheduled Tribes development (ST).

“All towns and cities will be able to transition from manhole to machine hole mode with 100% mechanical de-sludging of septic tanks and sewers,” Sitharaman added. Over the following three years, the government would also spend Rs 15,000 crore on tribal missions.

Following the President’s address, the Parliament’s Budget session convened on Tuesday. There will be 27 sittings through April 6. The first session of the Budget Committee will end on February 13. Following a month-long hiatus, the session will reconvene on March 12 and finish on April 6. On Tuesday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Economic Survey 2022-23.
