The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) will continue to be led by Nitin Gupta, as the Union Government has extended his tenure until June 30, 2024. This announcement was made on the day of his expected retirement. Gupta, a respected IRS officer from the 1986 batch, has been at the helm of the CBDT since June of the previous year. His term was originally scheduled to conclude on September 30, 2023.
The extension has been sanctioned by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). According to the government’s directive, Gupta will remain in his position as CBDT Chairman from October 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024. This extension is conditional on further instructions and is a deviation from standard recruitment rules.
The CBDT is the highest authority for formulating policies for the Income Tax Department. It consists of a chairman and up to six members who hold the rank of special secretary. Prior to his role as CBDT chairman, Gupta was a Member (investigation) on the Board. His reappointment follows a trend seen with his predecessors Sushil Chandra and Pramod Chandra Modi.
This decision ensures continuity in leadership for the CBDT, which plays a vital role in shaping India’s tax policies and administration.
