CPI inflation cools further, falls to 4.83% in April

India’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation, also known as retail inflation for April, eased to 4.83% versus 4.85 per cent in March 2024. The inflation is slowly moving to RBI’s comfort level of 4%. While CPI Urban inflation came in at 4.11 per cent, CPI rural inflation was at 5.43 per cent.

India’s retail inflation has been easing since December last year when it rose 5.69 per cent. For January and February, inflation prints came at 5.10 per cent and 5.09 per cent, respectively. In April, retail inflation saw a notable decline, coming at 4.83 per cent. Economists had expected the retail inflation to come near 4.80 per cent in April.

Among the top five groups, the year-on-year inflation on groups ‘Clothing & Footwear’, ‘Housing’ and ‘Fuel & light’ has decreased since last month.
