The actor’s death was confirmed by officials at Miot Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for pneumonia and relying on ventilator support.
Taking it to his official X handle, PM Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji. A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti.”

In September 2005, he founded his political party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK). The actor participated in the Legislative Assembly elections in 2006 and won a single seat. In the 2011 elections, his party allied with AIADMK and secured a majority, making Vijayakanth the leader of the opposition for the next five years.”
