The Bengali entertainment industry, often called Tollywood, came to a grinding halt on Monday as artists, technicians, and production houses announced an indefinite strike starting Tuesday morning. The move follows the shocking death of popular actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, who drowned on March 29 while shooting a television serial at Talsari beach in Odisha. What began as a personal tragedy has ignited a collective cry for accountability and stricter safety protocols on film and TV sets.
Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, 43, was a familiar face in Bengali cinema, television, and OTT platforms. Born to director Biswanath Banerjee, he started as a child artist at age three and performed in nearly 450 stage shows with his father’s theatre troupe. He made his film debut in Chaka alongside Mithun Chakraborty at 17, but shot to stardom in 2008 with the blockbuster Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, directed by Raj Chakraborty and co-starring his then-partner Priyanka Sarkar. The film ran for 25 weeks and cemented his place as a leading talent. Over the years, he appeared in films like Jackpot, Jaatishwar, Zulfiqar, and Chotushkone, played recurring roles in the Byomkesh franchise, and led experimental projects such as Rajlokhi O Srikanto. More recently, he hosted the popular YouTube podcast Shohoj Katha, inspired by his 13-year-old son Shohoj
The fatal incident occurred around 5-5:30 pm on March 29 at Talsari beach near Digha, during the shoot of the serial Bhole Baba Paar Karega. According to director Subhashis Mondal, principal photography had wrapped, and most of the cast had left. Banerjee, however, insisted on an additional unscripted drone shot for a honeymoon sequence with co-actor Sweta Mishra in knee-deep water. The first take went smoothly. A small wave unsettled Mishra, who stepped out. Banerjee pushed for a second take, wading deeper despite the team’s repeated warnings. A larger wave struck, causing him to slip and swallow water. The crew, along with lifeguards, rushed to his rescue. He was rushed to Digha State General Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Initial indications suggest a possible heart attack followed by drowning, though police are awaiting the post-mortem report. An unnatural death case has been registered, and authorities are questioning the production team on safety lapses.
The industry’s response was swift and unified. On April 4, a silent protest march from Technicians’ Studio to Radha Studio in Kolkata drew stars including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, Aparna Sen, Anjan Dutt, Srijit Mukherjee, and others. Placards demanded “Justice for Rahul.” The West Bengal Motion Pictures Artists’ Forum, of which Banerjee was a member, filed an FIR against the producers of Bhole Baba Paar Karega (reportedly Magic Moments Entertainment) after their initial response to queries was deemed “unsatisfactory and inadequate.” Forum members, joined by Banerjee’s wife Priyanka Sarkar (the couple had legally separated in 2017 but reconciled in 2023 for their son’s sake), held a press meet demanding a transparent probe.
Following an emergency meeting on April 5 at Technicians’ Studio—attended by Prosenjit Chatterjee and representatives from the Federation, producers, and directors—the Forum announced the indefinite strike. From 7 am on April 7, all artists and technicians will cease work on indoor and outdoor shoots until “specific steps are taken to thoroughly review and ensure the proper safety and security” of everyone on set. Members have been asked to gather at Technicians’ Studio at 10 am on Tuesday to show solidarity, though those on outstation outdoor shoots are exempt. Prosenjit Chatterjee shared the official statement on social media, underscoring the fraternity’s resolve.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences on X, calling the loss “stunning” and “deeply saddening” and an “irreparable loss” to Tollywood and Telewood. Filmmaker Raj Chakraborty described Banerjee as “a great actor with immense possibilities” whose death was “unbelievable and shocking.” Priyanka Sarkar appealed for privacy, requesting the media to respect the family’s grief.
