Indian cinema suffered a major loss on Monday when the news of veteran filmmaker Shyam Bengal surfaced on the internet. One of the pioneers of Indian cinema took his last breath at the age of 90 at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital due to chronic kidney disease.

As the news of his demise started doing the rounds on the internet, several celebrities paid their respects including Bollywood personalities and politicians.

Sharing the condolences, President Droupadi Murmu wrote that it is the “end of a glorious chapter of Indian cinema and television.” She sent condolences to the family members and his countless admirers in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also wrote a condolence message on his official X handle. He wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Shyam Benegal Ji, whose storytelling had a profound impact on Indian cinema… Om Shanti.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi labelled the filmmaker as “visionary” and penned, “His legacy in cinema and commitment to social issues will inspire generations.”

Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan also paid tribute to the legendary filmmaker. “We have lost another stalwart of the Film Industry today … Prayers and condolences.

Shyam Bengal was a renowned filmmaker who has delivered some of the most memorable films of Indian cinema, including Nishant, Bhumika, and Manthan.
