The reality show Rise and Fall witnessed an emotional moment as wrestler Sangeeta Phogat exited the show following the tragic news of her father-in-law Balwan Singh Punia’s demise. Balwan Singh, father of Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia, passed away on Thursday evening in Jhajjar, Haryana.

Emotional breakdown on the show

Sangeeta was informed of the heartbreaking development while on the sets of Rise and Fall. Overcome with grief, she broke down in tears and decided to leave the show immediately to be with her family.

Viewers and fellow participants were left emotional as she described Balwan Singh as a guiding force in Bajrang’s wrestling journey and someone who treated her like a daughter after her marriage into the Punia family.

Bajrang’s tribute to his father

Confirming the news on social media, Bajrang Punia wrote: “Bapuji is no longer with us. He took his last breath today at 6:15 pm. He worked tirelessly to bring us to where we are today. He was the backbone of our family. I can’t imagine life without him.”

Marriage and family bond

Bajrang Punia and Sangeeta Phogat tied the knot in November 2020 in a quiet ceremony at Balali village, Haryana. Sharing the announcement back then, Bajrang had written: “Today, I have chosen my life partner and it feels like I have gained another family.”

That bond became evident on Rise and Fall as Sangeeta, unable to contain her grief, decided to leave the show to stand by her husband and in-laws during this painful time.

Last rites in Khuddan village

The last rites of Balwan Singh Punia will be performed at the family’s native Khuddan village in Jhajjar, Haryana, on Friday. Tributes have been pouring in from the wrestling community, remembering him as the man behind Bajrang’s rise to Olympic glory.
