Nona Gaprindashvili files defamation suit of $5 million over false claims in The Queen’s Gambit

Nona Gaprindashvili, 80, filed defamation suit on Netflix for giving misinformation in The Queen’s Gambit.

A Georgian former chess world champion’s $5-million lawsuit against Netflix will go ahead after she claimed she was defamed in an episode of The Queen’s Gambit, a Los Angeles judge has ruled.

The motion was denied by federal judge Virginia Phillips on the strong argument as the series was based on work of fiction, the judge ruled, “the fact that the series was a fictional work does not insulate Netflix from liability for defamation if all the elements of defamation are otherwise present.”

The series claims the central character Beth Harmon is fictional and thus the motion doesn’t make sense.

The Queen’s Gambit, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, is based on a 1983 novel by Walter Tevis. The series claims she had “never faced men” in her career was “grossly sexist and belittling.” While Chess grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili, 80, doesn’t agree to what is shown.

Nona was the first woman to be awarded the International Chess Federation title of Grandmaster, in 1978. She was the women’s world chess champion from 1962-78 and successfully competed in several men’s tournaments.

Nona has competed with men and struggled hard to reach at the position. While, The Queen’s Gambit gives misinformation to the people which according to her is “dishonouring…misinformation”.
