Netflix is experiencing backlash on social media for re-releasing the film “Titanic” on its streaming site only days after the terrible sinking of the Titan tourist submarine, which killed all five people on board.
While the trolling is generally amusing, it highlights Netflix’s insensitivity towards the tragic tragedy. On June 18, the ill-fated submarine sank in the North Atlantic Ocean near the wreckage of the renowned Titanic.
Given the film’s ongoing appeal and capacity to enthral fans, the inclusion of “Titanic” on the streaming platform is undeniably a planned decision by the entertainment behemoth.
However, Netflix’s hasty decision to re-release the film so close to the Titan submarine accident has been slammed with charges of insensitivity. The plot of the film centres around a sinking ship, which could cause viewers distress if watched so soon after a real-life disaster.
One commenter responded to Netflix’s decision by saying, “Netflix just couldn’t stop themselves, huh?” Another said, “This time is so wrong.” According to a third user, “Netflix saw the opportunity and wasted no time.”

Although Netflix has not commented on the trolling, the corporation is certainly aware of the anger it has received. Given the backlash, the streaming behemoth may choose to remove “Titanic” from its repertoire temporarily or postpone its return to the site.
OceanGate Expeditions, the business that owned the doomed submarine, stated on Thursday that all five passengers aboard were assumed dead. This announcement followed the US Coast Guard’s earlier report that a debris field near the Titanic wreckage had been located by a remote-controlled vehicle.
The submarine was lost due to a “catastrophic implosion,” according to the US Coast Guard. During a news briefing, Rear Admiral John Mauger revealed that the Horizon Artic vessel’s remote operating vehicle (ROV) identified the tail cone of the Titan submersible roughly 1600ft away from the bow of the Titanic debris. Additional debris was detected, consistent with a catastrophic failure of the pressure chamber.
As the consequences of its choice become clear, Netflix may need to reconsider its content release strategy to ensure greater sensitivity and respect towards real-world tragedies.
