On Monday, SunNXT confirmed the OTT release date of Lal Salaam, in which Superstar Rajinikanth makes a long cameo appearance. The film will ultimately make its streaming premiere on April 12, which coincides with the Tamil New Year celebrations.
Lal Salaam’s digital release was delayed longer than normal, leaving Rajinikanth fans asking why. According to current industry norms, new Tamil films debut on streaming services within four weeks of their theatrical premiere. This rule applies to even the biggest box office hits.
For example, Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo made its OTT premiere barely after completing a little more than four weeks in theatres, despite performing exceptionally well in terms of box office.
Movies that receive mixed reactions and fail to strike a chord with the general public tend to stick to shorter OTT windows to protect their investments.

Lal Salaam was an exception. The film was released in theatres on February 9 and remained unavailable for streaming for longer than intended, despite mixed reviews and dismal box office success.
Inspired by true events, Lal Salaam saw Rajinikanth put his full weight towards improving the film’s overall appeal. In addition to playing an extended significant cameo part as Mohideen Bhai, he also wrote the film’s dialogue. Rajinikanth was also heavily active in promoting the film before to its release.
However, Lal Salaam failed to connect with the crowd. AR Rahman, an Oscar-winning composer, also provides the film’s soundtrack. It focuses on two main individuals, played by Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth, and explores a pressing social issue: rising intolerance and distrust among people of different faiths.
