In an unexpected twist of destiny, a newlywed husband is separated from his customarily veiled bride on a crowded train and mistaken for another lady. Unaware of the mix-up, he brings home a different-veiled bride, mistaking her for his wife.

Meanwhile, his actual wife arrives at the wrong railway station and embarks on an unexpected voyage. As the husband searches desperately for his missing wife, the stranded wife travels across strange countries. Unravelling alongside is the genuine intent of the woman who was accidentally transported to the wrong village.

Audiences also enjoyed the film’s music. The audience liked Arijit Singh’s ‘Sajni’. People also appreciated Shreya Ghoshal’s song ‘Dheeme Dheeme’, which appears near the end. Sukhwinder Singh’s song ‘Doubtwa’ received positive feedback for its words and music composition.

The film is based on Biplab Goswami’s book and features additional writing by Sneha Desai and music by Ram Sampath. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 and garnered a standing ovation.

Laapataa Ladies is director Kiran Rao’s second film, following the critically praised Dhobi Ghat. Aamir Khan was on the jury of a scriptwriting competition where the story was first submitted.

Impressed, he discussed the story with his wife, Kiran Rao, who agreed to helm the film. Khan was initially interested in playing a cop and even conducted a look test for the vital character.

However, Rao believed Khan’s involvement in the film would raise expectations. She instead chose Ravi Kishen, a well-known Bhojpuri actor and BJP MP, for the part. Kishen, who has played character roles in Hindi cinema for many years, received praise for his depiction as Inspector Manohar. Kishen stated that, for the first time in many years, he was involved in the entire film.
