Dept. Q can be found on Netflix and will hopefully become one of those crime/thrillers that you’ve been looking forward to – it features DCI Carl Mørck (played by Matthew Goode) and is set in Edinburgh, where cold cases are solved via both his sharp wit and cranky personality, along with a motley crew of misfit detectives who assist him. Fans are anxiously awaiting Season 2, which will have even more complex mysteries, tense interviews, everyone’s own demons, and the usual combination of darkness/humour plus emotional depth, after the exciting twists and resolutions of Season 1 in 2025.

Dept. Q Season 2 Release timeline

Netflix has officially renewed the British crime thriller for a second season following a strong debut in May 2025. The series adapts the novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, reimagining the Danish source material within a gritty Scottish setting.

  • Renewal announced: August 18, 2025
  • Platform: Netflix
  • Expected release window: Likely mid-2026 (no confirmed date yet)

In Edinburgh, filming is in process, and so far, the same atmospheric location where we shot Season 1 seems to be there again. One or two listings speculate that we will return in 2027; however, the current reports from industry sources indicate a planned return for 2026. As of now, therer is no teasers or first looks at the film that have released.

Dept. Q Season 2 Cast Updates

The core cast members are set to return:

  • Matthew Goode as DCI Carl Mørck
  • Alexej Manvelov as Akram
  • Leah Byrne as Rose
  • Jamie Sives as Hardy

During Season 1, the characters of Carl’s abrasive brilliance and Hardy’s dysfunctional family life became major elements in the plot line, but are expected to continue moving forward into Season 2.

Scott Frank, the creator of the show, will continue to be active in shaping the narrative direction and tonal essence of the continuing series.

As of now, there are no major new casting announcements regarding Season 2.

Dept. Q Season 2 Plot Details

Although the details for the new season are being kept very secretive, we do know that the cold case unit will again take on an old case that has been inactive for years. They may adapt the next book in the Adler-Olsen series (of 10 total) or create an original case based upon the books. Character development is expected to be a larger focus in this season, especially around Hardy’s recovery and Carl taking over more of a leader’s role.

The suspects will have complicated moralities, conspiracies will have multiple layers, and old secrets will be presented in a slow unravelling manner over time. In season one, there was a good mix between serious detective work and character-driven drama; in season two, the show’s creators are hoping to expand upon that with more mystery-driven storylines and emotional elements for the cast as they interact with one another throughout the season.
