In time for an Easter binge, Netflix has released the new ten-part series Beef. It is an A24 production that follows the increasing conflict between two drivers who collide in a risky road rage incident and just can’t seem to let it go.
The Korean showrunner Lee Sung Jin’s creation, which was loosely based on his own experience with a comparable traffic tantrum, explores in incredibly painful detail what happens to two LA residents named Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong) when they let their rage slowly take over their lives. Picture Michael Douglas from Falling Down twice.
The cast of Beef includes: Steven Yeun as Danny Cho,
Ali Wong as Amy Lau, Joseph Lee as George Nakai, Young Mazino as Paul Cho, David Choe as Isaac Cho, Patti Yasutake as Fumi Nakai, Maria Bello as Jordan Forster, Ashley Park as Naomi Forster, Justin H. Min as Edwin, Mia Serafino as Mia, Remy Holt as June, Andrew Santino as Michael, and Rek Lee as Bobby.
The Netflix series Beef has garnered favourable early reviews, receiving a pristine 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer.
The New York Times wrote: “What makes this one of the most invigorating, surprising and insightful debuts of the past year is how personally and culturally specific its study of anger is.”
Vulture highlighted the “paradoxically pleasurable sensation of anxiety and satisfaction,” adding: “Yeun and Wong’s vibrating, hostile chemistry makes for engaging feel-bad TV that critiques the very notion of inner peace.”
