Popular music festival Sunburn’s organisers announced on 1st November that the festival will take place from 27th to 29th December on Goa‘s Vagator Beach.
However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival will only allow a 20% capacity of the beach. The organisers also mentioned that the audience will have to follow social distancing measures as per COVID-19 Government and WHO Protocols.

According to Conde Nast Traveller, all guests will be mandatorily made to download the Aarogya Setu app for entry at the venue. Entry protocols include temperature inspection, sanitisation, and mandatory usage of face mask throughout the course of the festival. To ensure ample social distancing, private and designated zones have been allocated.
Karan Singh, COO, Percept Live said, “Covid-19 has literally put the pause on life. In India, we have witnessed stringent lockdown measures since March 2020. An unprecedented 7 months of staying in and staying safe. With the Unlock procedures initiated and specially Unlock 5 permitting ground events, we figured it’s time to restart lives.”
In September, Goa’s Deputy Chief Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar had opposed the idea of holding EDM festivals till a vaccine is launched. “To us, the safety of people is more important,” he had said. However, on Sunday (1st November), in a contradictory statement, he said, “We need to have such festivals with social distancing”.
The minister said, “We don’t want to hold it at a very large scale, this year, it would be restricted to around 12,000 people.” He also mentioned that if the Union ministry doesn’t permit the festival, the state government would terminate it. According to Times of India, the minister said that the file has been sent to a high-level permission committee for final authorization.
Meanwhile, the announcement of an EDM festival amidst a pandemic has attracted negative responses from netizens. Many Twitter users have criticised the organisers for wanting to conduct the festival.
Absolute stupidity. Goa has such poor healthcare system which is already suffering due to the inflow of tourists who are “Working from Goa” https://t.co/H25Y7YOmkP

We are in the 'we will advertise paid superspreading events' phase. 🤦♂️
The hit on the events business is massive -no denying, but it is also quite irresponsible to suggest holding a music festival given the number of cases and what we are seeing in Europe/US. https://t.co/P55KDQdz9B— Subrahmanyam KVJ (@SuB8u) November 1, 2020
Sunburn should take a leaf of Weekender's books and take it online this year. But they ain't ready for that conversation. If anyone I know is going to a music festival in the middle of a pandemic (if it indeed does happen) please feel free to never see me again, thanks.
