Tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain, passed away in San Francisco, United States, at the age of 73, on Sunday. His death resulted from complication of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, as revealed by his family.

He was hospitalized for two weeks, and was later shifted to ICU as his health worsened.

Several politicians, Bollywood stars, industrialists, and sport personalities have taken to social media to share tributes. The internet was flooded with tributes towards the legendary tabla maestro on Sunday night.

Those who paid tributes included leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, who posted, “The news of the demise of the great tabla player Ustad Zakir Hussain ji is extremely sad… My condolences are with his family and fans in this hour of grief.”

Mahindra group chairman Anand Mahindra wrote, “Rhythm of India paused today… In tribute.” While Adani group chairman Gautam Adani posted, “The world has lost a rhythm it can never replace… His legacy is eternal taal, resonation through generations to come. RIP.”
