It’s been a while since Olivia Rodrigo has released her debut album, “Sour,” which has become a staple in every teenager and TikToker’s summer playlist in 2021, but lately, the pop sensation has been facing some backlash due to its similarities with many great hits.

While the criticism and controversy are at play  Adam Levine, former coach on NBC’s “The Voice” and Maroon 5 frontman, has taken a step to defend Driver’s License singer, Rodrigo.

According to Page Six, Levine’s Instagram story discussed the situation as soon as he learned of it.

Levine defended the singer saying that it’s “tricky” to write music and more than often it’s probable to not even know you’re ripping something off.

According to Page Six, the Animals singer added that It’s a natural thing for it to happen,

“and sometimes it gets ugly and sometimes it’s warranted that people take legal action,”

“Sometimes it’s not warranted that people take legal action. And I think there’s definitely become more of a grey area that’s reared its ugly head these days,” the singer wrote.

While speaking on the situation, Levine asked for some compassion and love for Olivia and referenced the “Blurred Lines” lawsuit from 2015 when Marvin Gaye’s family sued Robin Thicke and Pharrell for plagiarism and won $7.3 million in a settlement which was reported by Rolling Stone the time.

Levine also wrote in his story “Without giving an opinion on what I think as far as how that one turned out, I do think that we should probably meet this with a little more compassion and understanding and try to find a way…,”

“After all this calling out, music is a creative thing and I just hate to see it crushed.”
