In a recent interview, actor Siddharth Malhotra addressed the comparisons made between his most recent film, Mission Majnu, and Alia Bhatt’s Meghna Gulzar-helmed Raazi (2018). Sidharth described the Raazi as a “good film” and claimed that there is no “alarming” similarity between the two films. Years ago, there were rumours that Alia and Sidharth were dating. Sidharth is rumoured to be getting married to Kiara Advani shortly, while Alia Bhatt is currently married to Ranbir Kapoor.
While discussing Mission Majnu in an interview with Film Companion, Sidharth said, “It is never a bad thing if people are trying to find a reference point for a film. It (Raazi) is a good film. It doesn’t feel like it (the comparison) is such an alarming thing. Yes, the elements on the outer periphery seeing the trailer might look similar.”
In the movie Mission Majnu, Sidharth plays an R&AW operative tasked with carrying out one of India’s “deadliest covert missions” while posing as a Pakistani citizen. Rashmika Mandanna appears in the movie as well. Some people linked the plot of the movie to Raazi, which starred Alia and Vicky Kaushal, after the teaser for it debuted earlier this month. Alia portrayed Sehmat, an Indian spy who wed a Pakistani Army officer, in that movie.
Sidharth also speculated about why the audience has been comparing Mission Manju with Raazi. He said, “It is in the same decade (1970s), has similar elements, but I think the experience is completely different. It is only fair to speak to people after January 20 (Mission Majnu’s release date), once they see the film… I think it is fair (the comparison), and we will have a better conversation when the film is out and we could discuss it. Comparison with a good film is always welcome, it is not a bad thing at all.”
The 20th of January saw the release of Mission Majnu, to mediocre reviews from the critics. The Shantanu Bagchi-directed movie is available to watch on Netflix.
