Actor Jr NTR‘s appearance in the teaser of S. S. Rajamouli‘s film RRR has attracted controversy which is now becoming a political issue. Telangana BJP State President and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar has threatened the director of violence.
A recently released trailer of the film reveals the look of actor Tarak as tribal leader Komaram Bheem. Towards the end of the teaser, Tarak can be seen applying surma, wearing an amulet, and donning a Muslim skull cap. This hasn’t gone down well with Bandi Sanjay Kumar who calls it a distortion of facts. At a public meeting, the BJP leader said, “For sensation, if Rajamouli puts a cap on the head of Komaram Bheem, will we keep quiet? Never.”
He also threatened the director with physical violence. “If you are going to make a film by undermining Komaram Bheem, by undermining the rights of Adivasis and by undermining the sentiments of Adivasis, we will hit you with sticks. If you release the film in theatres, we will set fire to every theatre showing your movie,” the politician warned.
When Rajamouli announced the project, he had mentioned that the film, based on two iconic tribal leaders, Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, is not a biopic. It is a fictional figment. “My film will not dwell on the stories of their rebellion that we already know. But, it will focus on what would have happened if they had met during their self-imposed exile and became friends,” Rajamouli had said earlier.
Komaram Bheem was an Indian tribal leader had fought against the Asaf Jahi dynasty for the liberation of Hyderabad and against the feudal landlords during the Nizam’s rule.
The makers of RRR are yet to respond to the controversy.
