KGF Chapter 2 song in Bharat Jodo Yatra: Karnataka High Court refuses to dismiss FIR against Rahul Gandhi

During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, two videos with songs from the film were posted without authorization, in violation of the Copyright Act.

The Karnataka High Court refused to dismiss the FIR filed against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, and Supriya Shrinate for allegedly “unauthorised” usage of music from Kannada film KGF Chapter 2 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra on Wednesday.

The petition was denied by a single-judge panel led by Justice M Nagaprasanna. “The petitioner appears to have tampered with the source code without permission, and this undoubtedly constitutes a violation of the company’s copyright,” the High Court wrote.

Following a complaint filed by the MRT music label for the alleged unauthorised use of music from Kannada film KGF Chapter 2 during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in November 2022, the Bengaluru Police opened a case against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress officials.

According to the lawsuit, the party violated the Copyright Act by posting two videos containing songs from the film during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

The FIR was filed against Rahul Gandhi, Jairam Ramesh, and Supriya of the Congress in the Yashwanthpur police station under the terms of the Copyright Act, the Information Technology Act, and the Indian Penal Code.
