The Malayalam survival drama film 2018 was chosen as India’s official entry for the 96th Academy Awards; it was announced earlier in the year. For those who are unaware, the film centres on the 2018 Kerala floods, which are regarded as the worst to hit the state in more than a century.

When it was released on May 5 of this year, the movie was an enormous smash. The film struck a chord with the Malayali audience, bringing many of them to tears, and they came in large numbers. According to the most recent information, 2018 was left off of the final Academy Awards nominee list.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the final list of nominees for the 10 categories of the prestigious event earlier today, on December 22. Sadly, none of the Indian films were selected this time.

In addition to 2018, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s most recent movie, 12th Fail, in which Vikrant Massey played the lead, was also eliminated. The movie was entered independently into the Best International Feature Film competition. Additionally, word has it that Nisha Pahuja, an Indo-Canadian director, is the director of the Canadian documentary film To Kill a Tiger, which has been shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature Film.

The film selected as India’s official Oscar entry for 2018 is only the fourth Malayalam production to have that distinction. Previously, the only films to be chosen as the nation’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category were Rajiv Anchal’s 1997 film Guru, which starred Mohanlal in the lead role; Salim Ahamed’s 2011 film Adaminte Makan Abu, which starred Salim Kumar in the lead, and the 2019 film Jallikkattu, directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery.

More about 2018: Real-life narratives with several strands that are connected by a natural disaster serve as inspiration for this year’s content. Along with Tovino Thomas, the ensemble cast of the movie had major roles from Kunchacko Boban, Asif Ali, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Lal, Narain, Aparna Balamurali, Siddique, and many others. The movie was a huge hit when it came out and went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie ever made.
