Dil Bechara: From delay in release dates, to MeToo allegations, here’s everything you need to know about Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film

Sushant Singh Rajput’s final film’s trailer is out. The fans of the late actor can’t keep calm as #DilBecharaTrailer started trending on Twitter last night, even before the trailer hit YouTube. It’s bittersweet reality that the much awaited film of Sushant won’t be a big screen release. The filmmakers decided to release the movie on OTT platform, Disney+ Hotstar, because of the uncertainty of the theatre opening in the pandemic.

The release of the film is all set on 24 July on Disney+ Hotstar, and it will be available for subscribers and non-subscribers too. The trailer for the film, which stars Rajput, Sanjana Sanghi and Saif Ali Khan, drops today. After the sudden demise of the lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the film developed a very strong emotional connection as well. The release of ‘Dil Bechara’ was postponed a couple of times between 2019 and early 2020. It was last month that the makers announced to stream it online as a tribute to late actor Sushant.

Many controversies were built and came to light during the production of the movie. As the MeToo movement gained momentum back in 2018, late actor Sushant was accused of sexual misconduct towards his co-star Sanjana Sanghi, which was later dismissed by Sanjana as baseless, saying that there was no truth behind the accusations. Moreover, the casting director, Mukesh Chhabra was also under the MeToo spotlight, as four independent incidents claimed that the casting director behaved in a vulgar fashion with the budding actresses. These controversies affected the shoot of the film.

The film is the Hindi adaptation of John Green’s 2012 bestseller novel ‘The Fault In Our Stars’. The story revolves around Kizie, played by Sanjana Sanghi, and Manny, played by Sushant.  Previously, the film was titled Kizie Aur Manny, after the names of its protagonists Kizie Basu and Immanuel Rajkumar Junior aka Manny, but later on, the makers renamed it in February 2019, based on a song from the film.

The movie is a romantic-comedy with a tragic turn. The duo, Kizie Aur Manny, are on the journey of exploring life together. The turn of events reveals that Kizie has only a few days left to live, as she suffers from cancer.

The movie went on floors in 2018. The major part of the film has been shot in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, and in Paris. ‘Dil Bechara’, helmed by casting director Mukesh Chhabra.

Besides Sushant and Sanjana, ‘Dil Bechara’ also stars Saif Ali Khan and Swastika Mukherjee in pivotal roles. Presented by Fox Star Studios and Directed by Mukesh Chhabra, the film gets its music from Oscar-winning music director AR Rahman and lyrics have been penned down by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
