Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna starrrer Chhaava, wherein the they will be playing the roles as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Maharani Yesubai, respectively, has landed into a controversy ahead of its release on February 14.

Earlier this week, the makers released the trailer of the film, which includes a sequence featuring the two actors performing a dance with the lezim, a traditional instrument tied Maharashtra’s cultural heritage. The depiction in the movie has sparked outrage from the Maratha community and groups, who has demanded for historical accuracy.

As reported by Free Press Journal, former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraji Chhatrapati, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, has urged the filmmakers to consult historians and ensure the portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj is both respectful and accurate.

While the former MP urged the importance of showcasing the valiant reign of Maratha rules, he also emphasized the needs of historical accuracy.

The controversy gained momentum after Maratha groups protested at the historic Lal Mahal in Pune, raising objections to the dance sequence shown in trailer.
