Veteran media personality and chairman of the Ramoji Group, Ramoji Rao, passed away at the age of 87 in a Hyderabad hospital on Saturday. Known for his revolutionary contributions to Indian media, Rao’s death marks the end of an era. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, describing him as a visionary who set new standards in journalism and the film industry.

Expressing his grief on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “The passing away of Shri Ramoji Rao Garu is extremely saddening. He was a visionary who revolutionized Indian media. His rich contributions have left an indelible mark on journalism and the world of films. Through his noteworthy efforts, he set new standards for innovation and excellence in the media and entertainment world.”
Modi also reflected on Rao’s passion for India’s development, saying, “Ramoji Rao Garu was extremely passionate about India’s development. I am fortunate to have got several opportunities to interact with him and benefit from his wisdom. Condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers during this difficult time. Om Shanti.”
Condolences from Political Leaders
Former Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu, TDP Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, and former Telangana CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao were among the many political figures who mourned Rao’s death.
Venkaiah Naidu praised Rao’s innovative spirit and dedication to the Telugu language and culture. Chandrababu Naidu highlighted Rao’s profound impact on the lives of Telugu people, stating that his demise is a loss not just to the state but the entire country.
Remembered by the Entertainment Industry
Ramoji Rao’s influence extended beyond media into the film industry, where he was remembered fondly by numerous celebrities. Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi shared an emotional message on X, calling Rao a mountain that never bowed down to anyone. Filmmaker SS Rajamouli praised Rao’s resilience and contributions, suggesting he be honored with the Bharat Ratna.
Actor Jr NTR expressed his sorrow, recalling Rao’s role in introducing him to the Telugu film industry. Allu Arjun and Kangana Ranaut also shared heartfelt tributes, highlighting Rao’s lasting legacy in media and entertainment. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma called Rao’s death “unbelievable,” emphasizing his transformation from an individual into an institution.
Ramoji Rao’s Legacy
Ramoji Rao’s contributions to media include the creation of the Eenadu newspaper and the ETV group of channels, which revolutionized the media landscape in undivided Andhra Pradesh. His work earned him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award.
Survived by his wife and son, Rao was admitted to a Hyderabad hospital on June 5 due to respiratory issues and passed away at 4:50 am on June 8. His mortal remains were moved to his residence in the renowned Ramoji Film City, where he will be honoured.
