Scott Wolf’s character, Dr. Richard Miller, faced severe consequences in the season finale of Fox’s Doc on March 18, as he was held accountable for his involvement in a patient’s death. The episode saw Richard admitting to his mistake, leading to his dismissal from Westside Hospital and leaving his future uncertain as his medical license remains under review.
Wolf, 56, shared his thoughts on the storyline in an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly, noting that the outcome felt inevitable. While he was unsure how events would unfold from the start, he described Richard’s arc as a “tragic story” that was bound to have an unfortunate conclusion. He appreciated the show’s commitment to giving every character depth, portraying them as complex individuals rather than clear-cut heroes or villains.
Richard’s downfall began early in the season when Dr. Amy Larsen, played by Molly Parker, hinted at knowing details about a patient’s death. After Amy suffered memory loss in a car accident, the issue remained unresolved until she discovered an old email suggesting concerns over the patient’s cause of death. Further investigation revealed that Richard had prescribed medication that ultimately led to the patient’s passing, though he initially attempted to shift the blame onto Amy. Upon learning the truth, she reported him to the hospital.
Reflecting on the storyline, Wolf acknowledged the personal struggles Richard was facing, including his son’s mental health crisis, which may have influenced his actions. However, with Doc renewed for a second season, Wolf remains hopeful about a redemption arc for his character, emphasizing the show’s theme of second chances.
Fox has confirmed the renewal, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu.
