Fans were excited to see Pochita take on the War Devil, Yoru, in Chainsaw Man, but the latest episode took an unexpected turn. Instead of an epic battle, we saw Pochita being forced by the Public Safety members and Hirofumi Yoshida to regurgitate a Devil he had swallowed earlier.
In Chapter 173, titled “Hard of Hearing,” we’re hit with a bizarre scene where everyone, from people to animals, suddenly loses their ears. The chapter opens with a chaotic montage: people in Tokyo, elephants, and even cats are shown earless. The situation is so extreme that people struggle to use phones, and communication becomes a nightmare.
Public Safety members scramble to communicate using gestures and signs. They soon realize that a Devil, known as the Ear Devil, is behind this strange phenomenon. Team C is quickly mobilized to track down the Ear Devil. Meanwhile, the scene shifts to three agents in a bathroom.
These agents cut off their left index fingers and use the severed parts to write on a mirror. They write “H,” “I,” and “T,” referencing the neck and spine. When combined, the letters spell “HIT,” and a new Primal Devil is glimpsed in the mirror’s reflection.
The Primal Devil is depicted in a gruesome scene, sitting on a throne made of human remains, with two people providing support. Its face is almost featureless, making it hard to discern its gender.
As the Devil raises its fist, the focus returns to Pochita, who has just finished devouring the Ear Devil. A mirror appears above Pochita, and the Devil’s fist grabs him. Pochita manages to sever two fingers and nearly escape, but then Hirofumi Yoshida arrives with the Octopus Devil and captures Pochita.
Yoshida praises himself for a job well done before squeezing Pochita, forcing him to vomit up the Ear Devil’s head. By the end of the chapter, the elephants have their ears back, and everyone’s hearing is restored.
