A year after the passing of Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor, the cause of her death has finally been disclosed. Initially, her death was reported as due to “natural causes,” with London’s Metropolitan Police stating that they were not treating it as suspicious. Now, the official cause has been clarified.
On July 26, 2023, O’Connor, 56, was found unresponsive in her London apartment. Known for her bold political stances and fearless approach to controversy, she had been deeply affected by the loss of her son Shane, who died by suicide in 2022 at the age of 17.
According to her death certificate, which was released by Irish Independent, Sinéad O’Connor passed away due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). She was also dealing with bronchial asthma and a low-grade lower respiratory tract infection. The cause of death was officially recorded in Lambeth, London, by her husband, John Reynolds.
O’Connor is survived by her three other children—Jake, Roisin, and Yeshua. On the first anniversary of her death, Dublin’s wax museum faced criticism and withdrew a wax figure of O’Connor that was deemed “hideous” by the public and her brother, John O’Connor. He emphasized that his sister was not around to defend or speak for herself, adding to the controversy.
