Deadpool & Wolverine is causing a major buzz in the cinematic world. The film’s success is fueled by the fantastic chemistry between its two A-list stars, the mix of R-rated action and humor, the plethora of cameos and Easter eggs, and the high stakes that keep audiences hooked.
A big part of these high stakes comes from a powerful new weapon introduced in the movie, one that might surpass even the Infinity Gauntlet from Avengers: Infinity War.
This game-changing weapon is called the “Time Ripper,” and it’s developed by Matthew Macfadyen’s character, Mr. Paradox. The Time Ripper plays a crucial role in the movie’s climax, ramping up the tension. But what exactly does it do?
What is a Time Ripper in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine?’
The Time Ripper is a device designed to mercilessly eliminate dying timelines using matter and anti-matter. Mr. Paradox intended to use it to wipe out Deadpool’s timeline, which was falling apart after Wolverine, its key figure or “anchor being,” died in Logan. Paradox planned to do this without the approval of his superiors.
When Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin, discovered the Time Ripper, she saw it as a betrayal of their deal. Nova aimed to seize control of the device to obliterate every timeline, leaving only the Void under her rule. This would give her power beyond anything seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even exceeding what the Infinity Gauntlet could achieve. When the Time Ripper was activated, it started tearing apart the universe in a chaotic, spaghetti-like fashion reminiscent of the visuals in Loki Season 2.
Deadpool and Wolverine set out to stop Nova’s plan to destroy all of reality using the Time Ripper. Mr. Paradox revealed that one of them could sacrifice their life to disrupt the device. Instead, they teamed up, using their healing abilities and combined strength to thwart the Time Ripper, destroy it, and defeat Nova.
With the multiverse being such a significant aspect of the MCU, there’s a chance we might see more Time Rippers in future films, perhaps playing a key role in events leading up to Avengers: Secret Wars. For now, though, the Time Ripper introduced in this movie has been dismantled.
