Prince’s longtime drummer and close associate, Sheila E., faced an emotional setback while trying to celebrate what would have been Prince’s 66th birthday. Known in the music world as Sheila E. but born Sheila Escovedo, she planned a heartfelt visit to Prince’s iconic Paisley Park studio, only to be denied entry.
A Heartbreaking Homecoming
Sheila E. was in Minneapolis ahead of Morris Day and The Time’s concert at the Northern Lights Casino. With plans to commemorate Prince’s birthday, she intended to visit Paisley Park to film a live video and take some photos. However, her access to the studio where she and Prince had created many of his greatest hits was unexpectedly blocked.
Speaking about the incident, Sheila E. said, “I went in to celebrate him, and I wanted to go into the studio and do a live video, take a picture, and they said, ‘No.’” Although she was allowed on the premises, being barred from entering the studio left her deeply saddened. “I can’t go to the studio where I recorded all those records and songs and everything I did with him,” she added, expressing her heartbreak, “My heart’s broke; that’s kinda messed up…they’re saying no to me. Not a nice way to celebrate his birthday.”
Sheila E. shared her disappointment on social media, posting a candid video that ended with a poignant, “So, happy birthday Prince.” The accompanying caption criticized Paisley Park’s management for the decision. In response, staff members commented on her post, explaining that filming inside the studio was restricted due to ongoing tours and that prior notification would have helped accommodate her visit.
Reflecting on Paisley Park
In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, Sheila E. reminisced about the deep connection between Prince and Paisley Park. She recalled Prince giving her a tour of the studio while it was still under construction and being the first artist to record there. The emotional toll of being denied entry was compounded by her history with the place. Despite a tour guide acknowledging her contributions, Sheila E. was still not permitted inside, leading her to request the return of her drum kit, which Prince had borrowed for display in his museum.
A Shared Musical Journey
Sheila E. and Prince’s musical collaboration was legendary. She served as his drummer and musical director through much of the late 1980s and shared an on-and-off romantic relationship with him during that time. Prince even proposed to Sheila E. in the ’80s. Since his sudden death in 2016, Sheila E. has been vocal about her grief and her admiration for his legacy.
Despite the recent incident, Sheila E. continues to honor Prince’s memory. She paid tribute to him at the 2020 Grammys and reflected on their time together during the fifth anniversary of his death in 2021. Whether through music or personal memories, Sheila E. cherishes the moments they shared, underscoring the enduring bond between them.
