Longtime KTLA entertainment anchor Sam Rubin, who passed away earlier this year, was honored with the 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Governors Award on Saturday night. This award, given posthumously, recognizes his impressive career of over thirty years in entertainment news reporting for KTLA.

In addition to the Governors Award, Rubin also won an Emmy in the entertainment news category for his coverage of the SAG-AFTRA strike on “KTLA Morning News” last year.

Overall, public broadcaster KCET (now known as “PBS SoCal Plus”) had a standout night, winning ten awards across various categories. Their wins included culture/history for “Legacy 10 Days In Watts,” L.A. local color for “Angel City Press: L.A. Through the Pages — Artbound,” independent programming for “Everybody Dance,” and crime/social issues for “Bonnie Boswell Presents: Saving Moms,” among others.

In the main newscast categories, the awards were more spread out compared to last year. Spectrum News 1’s “Your Morning on Spectrum News 1” won for morning newscasts (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.), KCAL took home the award for daytime newscasts (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and KVEA won for evening newscasts (7 p.m. to 12 a.m.).

This marks the eighth consecutive year that KCET has led in the number of awards won. KCET received the most nominations this year with 22, slightly down from last year’s 24. Spectrum News 1 followed with 17 nominations, up from 14 the previous year.

The Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards celebrate locally produced programs across various categories including crime and social issues, culture and history, the arts, human interest, sports, the environment, and live and breaking news coverage.

The 76th Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards took place on Saturday evening, July 27, 2024, at the Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills. The event was produced by Bob Bain and Bob Bain Productions, with journalist Michaela Pereira serving as the host.
