Well, it’s time to break out the leis and hula skirts because Walt Disney Animation has officially made a splash with the announcement of Moana 2! Cue the applause and thank-yous, folks—it’s a momentous occasion in the magical kingdom of animated films.

Back in 2016, Disney blessed us mere mortals with “Moana,” a cinematic gem that took us on a breathtaking voyage through Polynesian-inspired wonders. With its dazzling animation, endearing characters, and toe-tapping tunes, “Moana” quickly became the crown jewel of Disney’s recent endeavors, earning itself not one but two Academy Award nominations. And let’s not forget about our spirited heroine, Moana herself (voiced by the talented Auli’i Cravalho), who effortlessly paddled her way into the esteemed club of iconic Disney Princesses—though she’s not exactly keen on the title.

With a treasure chest overflowing with nearly $700 million at the box office, it was only a matter of time before Disney set sail for further adventures in Moana’s world. First, there were whispers of a television series, but those waves have been relatively calm since the initial announcement in 2020. Then, out of the blue in 2023, Dwayne Johnson and Disney made waves by dropping the bombshell of a live-action retelling of Moana’s tale, despite the original film barely reaching its tenth anniversary. While the prospect of seeing the oceanic wonders of Moana’s world brought to life in live-action sounds intriguing, some fans couldn’t help but yearn for more of Moana’s original journey rather than a rehash.

But lo and behold! Like a wish granted by the enchanted ocean itself, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed in February 2024 that the plans for the Moana series have been upgraded to a full-fledged feature film—Moana 2, to be precise. Typically, when Disney announces new animated ventures, we brace ourselves for a lengthy wait, akin to patiently thawing out a block of ice. However, the news of Moana 2 has us setting sail with Moana and her ohana much sooner than expected. So, grab your oars and join us as we dive into everything we know (and eagerly anticipate) about Disney’s anticipated sequel, from its cast to its trailer, release date, and beyond!

Does ‘Moana 2’ Have a Trailer?

Following the film’s surprise announcement, Disney also dropped a tantalizing sixteen-second teaser trailer for “Moana 2.” The teaser opens with a breathtaking shot of an island at sunset. We see Moana step onto the sandy beach and blow into a conch shell, accompanied by some enchanting music. The teaser wraps up with a title card, the November release date, and an enthusiastic yell that unmistakably belongs to Moana’s demigod companion, Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson).

Alongside the teaser, Disney also shared an early still from the film, showcasing Moana, Maui, her animal friends Pua and Heihei, and other characters navigating the seas on their boat beside a massive whale shark.

On May 29, 2024, Walt Disney Animation released a second trailer for “Moana 2.” Although still very much a teaser, this trailer gives us a clearer picture of what to expect. It appears Moana is continuing her oceanic explorations right where we left off. The teaser highlights several notable moments, including the return of the mischievous coconut Kakamora pirates and the much-anticipated reunion between Moana and Maui. Eagle-eyed viewers might even spot a younger version of Maui, suggesting we’ll get a glimpse into his life before he became a demigod.

Moana 2 plot details: What is ‘Moana 2’ about?

The official plot synopsis for Moana 2 reads as follows:

“Walt Disney Animation Studios’ epic animated musical ‘Moana 2’ takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”

Bob Iger later confirmed what many had suspected: the previously announced Moana show had indeed been transformed into “Moana 2.” The Disney CEO explained that the decision stemmed from the team’s immense admiration for the show’s development:

“We were impressed with what we saw, and we knew it deserved a theatrical release. The original Moana film from 2016 recently crossed 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ and was the most-streamed movie of 2023 on any platform in the U.S.”

Clearly, the magic of Moana continues to captivate audiences, making the leap to the big screen a natural and exciting progression for this beloved story.

Moana 2 cast details

One of the brightest highlights of the original “Moana” was its dynamic lead stars. The first film served as the breakout debut for Auli’i Cravalho, who brought the seafaring explorer Moana to life. Recently, Cravalho starred in the musical remake of “Mean Girls” and has now been officially confirmed to return to Motunui for “Moana 2.” However, she previously announced she wouldn’t be reprising the role for the upcoming live-action remake, though she remains involved as a producer.

Reflecting on her journey, Cravalho said:

“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career. In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital the casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. So, as an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength. I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that help inspire her story. And I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representations to come. Mahalo.”

And who could forget the WWE superstar and “Fast and the Furious” franchise member, Dwayne Johnson, who lent his voice to the cocky demigod Maui, showcasing his surprising musical talent? Johnson is confirmed to return for “Moana 2” and will also reprise his role as Maui in the live-action remake.

Johnson reflected on his role as Maui:

“Playing the character of Maui has been one of the most life-changing experiences—one of the most life-changing roles… It’s part of my culture.”

He elaborated on the cultural significance of Maui in a heartfelt statement:

“So much fun becoming MAUI again—a character that changed my life in many ways—including the character of MAUI being inspired by my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia. The Polynesian cultural significance of the role and our story has touched families around the world and has easily become one of my truest honors to bring to life and share. Excited for you and your families around the world to join us on this journey.”

As for the rest of “Moana 2’s” cast, it’s expected to feature a mix of returning voices and new additions. Potential returnees include Rachel House as Moana’s spiritual grandmother, Tala; Temuera Morrison as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Nicole Scherzinger as Moana’s mother, Sina; and Jemaine Clement as the villainous, greedy crab Tamatoa. Moana’s beloved animal companions, Pua and Heihei, are also expected to return, with prolific character actor and “Firefly” star Alan Tudyk almost certainly voicing Heihei, continuing his tradition of appearing in every Walt Disney Animation project since he played King Candy in “Wreck-It Ralph.”

With such a stellar cast and the promise of new adventures, “Moana 2” is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the beloved franchise.

Who is making ‘Moana 2’?

“Moana 2” will mark the directorial debut of David G. Derrick Jr., a high-stakes task given the original film’s success and beloved status. The pressure is further amplified by Derrick Jr. stepping into the shoes of Disney legends Ron Clements and John Musker, who co-directed the first “Moana.” Derrick Jr. isn’t new to the world of Moana, having served as a story artist for the original film. His impressive resume also includes work in the art departments of animated hits like “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Megamind,” “Encanto,” and more. Overseeing the project as executive producer is Walt Disney Animation Studios CCO Jennifer Lee.

A key highlight of the first “Moana” was its music, crafted by the immensely talented Lin-Manuel Miranda, who was still riding high on the success of “Hamilton” at the time. However, Miranda will not be returning to create new songs for “Moana 2.” Instead, the sequel boasts a quartet of Grammy-nominated artists set to bring its musical landscape to life. This talented group includes Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and original “Moana” composer Mark Mancina.

With this combination of new directorial vision and a fresh musical team, “Moana 2” promises to build on the magic of its predecessor while introducing exciting new elements to the beloved franchise.
