Mr. Schue almost was not on the finale episode of Glee. During the appearance of Matthew Morrison on And That’s What You REALLY Missed podcast by Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale, he revealed that he was asked to exit the show early, a request that was initially granted before being revoked for a tragic reason.
He explained it to his former co-stars that in the season 5, his character, Will Schuester, was not being used in a way he wanted to. “No disrespect to the show… I was like ‘Maybe if I get off the show I can go do something else.'”
While the producers had first approved to let him off the show, everything changed when Cory Monteith died in 2013 due to an accidental drug overdose at the age of 31.
“Cory passed and then they said they couldn’t do it because you can’t have the two main guys on the show [leave],” explained Matthew. He added that despite of understanding the producers’ reasoning, he had to come to terms with his own selfish needs.
