Jon Landau, who was best known for producing blockbuster hits like Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)—three of the top four highest-grossing movies ever—has passed away at the age of 63.
Landau’s work on Titanic earned him an Academy Award for Best Picture, along with other accolades such as a Golden Globe, a Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Award, a People’s Choice Award, and a Florida Film Critics Circle Award. His impressive career also included producing Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), Dick Tracy (1990), Solaris (2002), and Alita: Battle Angel (2019).
He was instrumental in overseeing the construction of Fox Baja Studios in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, a sprawling 40-acre facility featuring massive movie sets, the world’s largest shooting tank, and five soundstages, including one the size of a football field.
Landau was born on July 23, 1960, in New York City, and he passed away in Los Angeles, California, on July 5, 2024, just shy of his 64th birthday.
According to his son Jamie, Landau’s death followed a 16-month battle with cancer, though the specific type of cancer was not publicly disclosed. His passing marks a significant loss to the film industry, and his contributions will be remembered and cherished for years to come. May he rest in peace.
